Pre-Video Assignment, Perry
Good video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFWw5qISKjc
This video is very engaging. It includes very good visuals and music that puts the viewer at the scene.
The narration isn't boring and you can tell that he is interested and passionate about the topic. He also describes the food very well, it's almost like you can taste it. Even though it was a long video it was interesting to watch the whole thing.
Bad video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPR6tWcmnNY
Though I liked the perspective of the video, I believe that the transitions between scenes could have been better. I thought the the music was too loud and abrupt and kind of random. Parts of it also seemed staged and instead of having a natural flow.

Good Video: https://nyti.ms/2z0KFqf
This is a NY Times video about the current independence situation in Catalonia. It gives the background in a way that's not confusing and has a clear focal point: the way separatists are using rhetoric to sell their idea. The video is high quality and the writing is full of imagery, putting the conflict in cultural and historical context. I was engaged the entire time I watched this, and I felt very educated at the end.
Bad Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YVciU8ZUseY&feature=youtu.be
Completely separate from the political bent of this video, it does a bad job of telling the story of the Kevin Spacey scandal. The anchor/reporter's video is not high quality and his audio is muffled. The setting looks unprofessional, and he has no script. I think going off the cuff would work if he were talking with someone else, but his rambling left me very bored and disengaged from the story. The video he uses is all taken from the Washington Post and other sources, but instead of giving credit, he just uses an entire picture of their website. There's also a very long add inside the broadcast before he gets to the story. I know this is not meant to be news in the NY Times sense, but nonetheless, it is an attempt to tell a story and break it down that severely misses the mark because it does not use storytelling techniques like script writing or using actual gathered video.

Good Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_0TCrGtTEQM
This video has compelling and dynamic graphics; provides context for the topic of discussion; and explains the data used in the video with experts, related graphics and easy-to-understand terms.
Bad Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jrg36vwv6dc
This video has some good shots but most of the content is boring. I think the vlog-format makes it hard to capture some of the more interesting moments because the videographer can't film all day long but he could have used footage from previous days or voiced-over footage of him actually doing things.

Pre-Video Assignment, Gray
This is an example of a good multimedia project. The way
part of the video is framed through the eyes of someone’s Facebook timeline
which makes sense with the lighting. All of the videos and stills make sense
with the project and are clear and well done. The narrative and the flow of the
project makes sense and also makes sense when paired with the visuals. The
quality of the sound is good and consistent throughout the entire video forming
a cohesive project.
Bad Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aW8BDgLpZkI
This is an example of a bad multimedia project. The camera
in this video is shaky when focused on a lot of the people when it would make
more sense and be more visually appealing to be steady. Also, when you can’t
hear well what the other people are saying as opposed to what the person holding
the camera is saying. Some of the lighting in the video is off and the faces of
people can be difficult to see at times.

Good Video: http://mj.unc.edu/student-multimedia-projects (Within Reach)
This project really allowed the people involved to tell story. The lighting and sound was always good and used use of time passing at the end and let the viewer continue to follow the story if the boy was getting arms. It kept you engaged with good visuals and compelling imagery.
Bad Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DrF9-DpV7zk
The sound quality is good but it took me a second to figure out what the questions were with the interviews. There sentences were cut off halfway through and the transitions were a bit cheesy.

Good Multi-Media Project:
The Hidden World of Vivian Maier
(privacy issues prevent embedding into the page, so the link is below)
https://vimeo.com/36035557
This is a good multi-media project because the narrator begins the story with a vague yet personal anecdote that connects himself to the subject of the story. He then introduces himself and describes how he grew up and why he is connected with Vivian Maier. The visuals are accurate to each part of the narrative as it progresses. With black and white photographs, the soundtrack fits the feeling of the mid-1900s era snapshots. The narrator brings on a renowned photographer to qualify Maier's work and way of life. Sound quality is on point as well.
Bad Multi-Media Project:
Super Uber projects
I am not a fan of this project because the visuals are scattered. Although thematic to what the purpose of this convention is (cultural education), there is no script to describe what each station is or what the mission of Super Uber is. The music comes off as slightly aggravating as it persists for the entire five minutes of the project. Camera work could be better as well although the videographer does vary between wide, medium and close shots.

Good video project: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=OSzw5QOWK60
Despite the shot of j.robb at his desk, which does not have great lighting, I think that this is a very good video multi-media project. It keeps a viewer engaged over the course of the entire video, showing shots from different perspectives and angles. There was a good blending of the interview audio over the visuals. In addition, the music matches the mood of the video.
Bad video project: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=9Ccfbblu7P8
What makes this a lackluster video multi-media project is that it’s very bland. While this is an interview, for majority of the video, the shots just go back and forth between the interview and the interviewee. There is no music in the video and there is an echo in the room where the interview is taking place, making the video appear even more dry and boring.

This is an example of a good video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bk2bQR7IhCU
I like this video because it uses an anecdote at the beginning to show the message, and the angles of the interviews are correct in terms of eye placement. There are a few flaws, like his close up interview shot and the difference in pitches with each interview is slightly off, but for the most part, it does not take back from the message of the video, making it a good video overall.
This is an example of a bad video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPR6tWcmnNY
While I understand what the filmmaker was going for in terms of how it was shot, with no interviews and from their perspective, the sharp edits and quick shots make it hard to follow. The camera was shaky at times, which makes sense during action shots, but at other times, it was not necessary and took away from the message of the video. The songs in the background were also distracting because they had lyrics that were identifiable, and it made the viewer want to listen instead of watch.

This multimedia video is bad because it has shaky camera, poor resolution, and the volume is constantly changing. The sound echoes and the shots are too long.

This multimedia video is good because it has interesting and varied shots, great resolution, and the audio lines up beautifully with the video. It's also aesthetically pleasing to look at.

Pre-Video Assignment:
I really like the filming and editing of Molly Alkon’s multi-media project. She does a great job of guiding the viewer through the “Fresh Fit and Fearless” lifestyle. By having Lila, the creator of “Fresh Fit and Fearless”, voice over the videos of her making recipes and shopping enhances her informational audio portion. The video and sound really complement each other throughout the entirety of the project. While the topic is one dimensional in the sense that it only focuses on one subject, “Fresh Fit and Fearless”, Molly uses all of the food Lila makes to give the project an advantage by giving a behind the scenes perspective. I am also focusing primarily on the story of one person and have struggled to weave different visual perspectives into my filming. However, Molly’s project and different angled footage demonstrate that with great filming and editing one person’s story can metamorphose into multi-perspective multi-media project.
There is really no comparison between Molly’s multi-media project and Leah Gibson’s multi-media project. While Leah’s project was created in a different class, the foundational rules of professional filming and editing skills were not exercised in Leah’s project. The majority of the video was set up as an interview segment, however; the camera was not steady, the frame was not traditional, and Leah attempted to zoom in and out of the frame, which was very distracting. At some points, part of the subject was even cut out of the frame. Furthermore, the topic of the multi-media project was about the transition period for international students, but the setting of the video was confined to the subject’s dorm room, specifically her bed and desk. I definitely think this project would benefit from more creative settings for the interview and maybe a better organization of questions. The transitions between questions were clear, but the video used as the backdrop for displaying the questions seemed mildly related.

Good example:
http://findingsanctuary.nyc/home.html
This project is from NYU and is very visually appealing and offers a variety of multimedia techniques. I liked how typed words were incorporated into the video for emphasis. The project flowed nicely and the images really captured a specific tone.
Not so good example:
http://bronxink.org/parkash/
While the story itself was interesting, the limited views of the video was not very visually pleasing. The voice-over was very descriptive, but the film lacked creativity.

Pre-Video Assignment, Trager
Good:
http://mj.unc.edu/student-multimedia-projects (Feeding Dreams)
This project uses the characters’ voices to tell their story. The story flows nicely without the student having to narrate anything in between the interviews, which I like a lot. I think it’s impressive that the student was able to create a cohesive story just by the questions he or she asked. I also like how the project juxtaposes the children’s outlook on their life against the mother’s perspective on the food stamp issue. The shots of the children playing in the park or in their house really illuminates how naive they are to the problem. Finally, I think the project was well shot and the music added a nice touch.
Bad:
I think this project could have been done better. It is much less professional than the “good” project I selected. First of all, there are a lot of blurry shots that make the video hard to watch. It opens with footage from a car’s point of view, but it’s very unsteady, which is an immediate turn off. There are multiple times during this project that the video isn’t clear. The audio is also uneven. Some of it is really hot and some of it sounds scratchy; at certain points it’s actually hard to understand what’s being said. On a different note, this video seems to be edited with iMovie, as can be seen from the black screens with the white words. There are a couple of points in the project where I think instead of writing out these words, the student could have found more file footage of the team playing. I think almost any footage would have been better than the words. Similarly, some of the graphics are a little immature and could have been formatted better.

Pre-Video Assignment, Blum
Good Multimedia Project:
I thought this video multi-media project was really well put together. The background music in the beginning, the sounds of the broadcasters, the cut-away shots of play on the baseball field and the players in the dugout was really well incorporated in setting the tone for the rest of the video. Also, the natural sound of the ball making contact with the wooden bat in the beginning was a nice touch. I liked how the producer of the video took a few videos of the subject, Landon Holifield, pitching and weaved it in nicely with the interviews with Holifield to really drive home the story. I thought Holifield was a very interesting person, which allowed the videos of him and the team playing to really enhance the quality of the project overall. There was no shaky video and the producer did not pan around the room at all, which was good. The producer utilized different angles, especially for the interview portion of the video, making this a good multi-media project as a result.
Bad Multi-Media Project:
I did not think this video multi-media project was well put together. The beginning of the video starts off really slow and the first video shot is very shaky. Also, the producer of the video added too many effects to the transitions between scenes, which was distracting. There were also delays in most of the video, which was not good. It was hard to understand the purpose of this project, so I was confused what was going on throughout the entire video. The music choice varied, which meant the tone of the video was inconsistent and did not really work with the content of the video. In addition, some of the video quality was also blurry. Overall, the weird choice of music, the bad video quality, too many video transition affects made this a a bad multi-project as a result.

Example of a good video multimedia project:
Example of a bad video multimedia project:
Obviously a a student's video for a final class project cannot compare to a video published by The New York Times, but both are clear examples of what and what not to do for a video. The video by the NYT titled "Girl Boxer" features clear audio and seamless editing, with different locations and active movement to show progression of the video and keep the viewer engaged. The other video, a girl's final project for NPM's Digital Journalism and Storytelling Course, is not as interesting and does not have pleasant audio. The pictures featured are not easy to view as they are constantly moving at a fast pace, and we listen to two people talk for very long times at separate points in the video. This does not capture the viewer's attention, and it is easy to get distracted. The final project video is only an example of the starting point, while the NYT clip is an example of a great type of video that we can learn how to create.
