Pre-video assignment, Williams

Good example:

Part of the reason I liked this was the subject matter - I just thought it was sweet. There were also some great video elements, though. The reporter made sure to interview people from all angles of this story - prison employees, prisoners, children and their usual guardians. The close-ups of the peoples' reactions help the audience feel emotion, and the team had footage of preparation for the event that built anticipation. The hook, talking to the child who had never met her father, was especially poignant.

Bad example:
Even though I originally saved this video for my "good" example (because I love dogs), as I was thinking about it, it was easier to point out the video's flaws than it's strengths. The hook, of dogs playing in a yard, isn't unique enough to pull the viewer in - and the cameramen don't use b-roll when interviewers are talking. There are also instances in the video, like in the cat room, where the lighting makes it difficult to see the people who are talking. I also thought the music was weird, but since this video is a few years old, I'm willing to write that one off.

Photo assignment #2, Williams

This is my roommate, Megan Gotsch. We met last year in our mutual club, Baptist Collegiate Ministries. She is a junior now, studying mechanical engineering. Megan is incredibly smart, ranked in the top 5% of her program, and she currently works as a math tutor on campus. One day, she wants to design roller coasters for amusement parks. She has a young spirit - she enjoys board games, outdoor activities and adventures that involve traveling. She is responsible for 99 percent of the times I leave campus.
Gotsch at the Maryland Renaissance Fair, testing the hammocks. She attempted to convince me that we could use them to replace the beds in our dorm room.
Gotsch, sitting at the common room table for one of her typical late nights. She loves engineering, and gets her homework done days early, so she can visit office hours if she needs to. After 10:30 p.m., Gotsch runs exclusively on leftovers and mint tea.
Gotsch buys a floral crown at the renaissance fair. She loves princesses, especially Ariel from The Little Mermaid and Belle from Beauty and the Beast.

The display of 3,000 flags on McKeldin planted Thursday commemorates the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York. The University of Marlyand College Republicans orchestrates the display every year.

The flags are planted just below the McKeldin fountain, near the intersection of the crosswalks.
The wind pushes the flags, but it is not strong enough to blow away the ones that have fallen over.
The administration building directly overlooks the patriotic display.
