Natoli Pre-Video Assignment
Good Example: TerpSki
This video is for the Maryland student group TerpSki, and while it’s a bit wild, I think it shows great video technique. For starters, the camera is very steady throughout, even in the action shots while moving down the mountain. They make good use of wide, medium, and tight shots, especially detail shots. They use lots of different angles and perspectives. Some of them I have no idea how they got. Additionally, they use really different clips (it’s not boring or repetitive) and have a good mix of skiing actions shots and partying/other activities.
Bad Example: Student Journalism Multimedia Project
While this project is not too bad, I think it could definitely be improved. In the very first shot, the reporter is too far away and very small in the frame. They are clearly trying to get both the reporter and the football statue, but cut off the top of the statue. They manage to capture neither one very well. I think they should have had the camera farther away and the reporter much closer to the camera so they could get both without the reporter looking tiny. He is also in the center of the frame and should stand to one side. They did not use a tripod and the entire video is a bit shaky. Finally, I think this project could have benefited from a closer or sign off because the end is rather abrupt.

This is a teaser for a full length documentary. I think it does a great job of showing the visually intriguing aspects of cheerleading, while also making the viewer interested in the story.

While I love this video, you can tell that the videographer was inexperienced and working on short time frame. The editing and angles could be enhanced greatly.

This video was so amazing to me because it spoke for itself without needing the assistance of any sort of narration. Additionally, it was composed in such a way that it built upon itself gradually, eventually becoming this amazing song that was just as interesting to watch as it was to listen to. As a multimedia project, I believe this surpassed what would be expected as an acceptable, original piece.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VtytCIrXOfw
In my opinion, this is an example of a half-assed project. Though there was clear thought behind the animation, I don't think the execution was up to par. Additionally, I wasn't a huge fan of the audio and the mixed photo-on-animation technique.

Viscomi Pre- Video Assignment
10 Reasons to Travel from Luke Fraser on Vimeo.
I loved and was absolutely amazed by this video. Without having to narrate at all, the makers of the video were able to get their point across "10 reasons to travel" through breath taking videos of nature, life, and people from all over the world. I thought their reasons were creative; not basic reasons to travel that I would think of right away. The music that went a long with the video was very fitting. I also liked how all of their videos and pictures were from different angles and perspectives; if they kept the same angle or shot the entire time the video would have been redundant. http://library.udel.edu/multimedia/spotlight/downtown/ I did not think that this was a good multimedia project at all. The topic in the beginning had potential, as the makers of the video stressed how there was a need for change. This sympathized the story and engaged the viewer. However, the project then turned into long, drawn out interviews and poor quality photos. Transitions throughout the video were also weak.

Fialkow Pre-Video Assignment
I think the video sequencing in this project does a helluva job. The project itself is insanely clever...maybe one of the reasons why its was a top five video when you type in "multimedia project" on youtube. The person definitely could have done a better job syncing up certain noises with the actions done, but, overall the idea is simply genius and incredible to watch. The branch as a violin was especially well done.
Sure, it's clever and corny, which is always fun. Still, the video itself can be heavily imporved, and the cuts could flow much better. I'm not hating the idea -I actually tend to like it, it's funny -I'm simply saying it could've been put together more methodically and carefully, for a much better and funnier product.

Cwieka, Pre-Video Assignment
I love this video first and foremost because it got a huge emotional reaction out of me, and I think it's something everyone can relate to. It told an interesting story full of feeling without being too cliché or saccharine. I also really liked how it kept switching back and forth and weaved all the different subjects' stories together. The quotes were unique and different but overall the video was engaging and easy to follow.
I thought this video was fine, but it had the potential to be a lot better. I like how the camera didn't move a lot and the video had a lot of angles, but I wish that more than one person had talked - I think it got a little boring by the end. Also, I think if the videographer had done some voiceover that would've added to the story and allowed for more detail in covering the fair.
Weiner - Pre-video Assignment
I love this ESPN 30 for 30 short but I felt that the cuts they make are very dull and uninteresting and the piece could have been done better visually, but the story itself is fantastic.
This video gives me the chills every time I see it. Like the schedule makers, this is a great piece that tells a truly unique story, but the visuals in this video are much better, they show emotion that no words can capture.
Owens, Pre Video Assignment
Good Project
I feel that this PSA project is a great representation of what good video journalism should contain. It has a variety of angles of shots for the interview parts, which makes basic, not-always-interesting shots of people speaking more visually appealing and, therefore, more enjoyable to watch. This video has a lot of cool shots to emphasize the point of the PSA and all of the shots match the voice over. In addition, the camera quality and quality/focus of the shots enhances the project overall.
Bad Project
The main shot for the interview is slightly dark and the audio for the interview is difficult to hear throughout. The main shot of the subject also has a lot of head room. There is no background music, which makes the interview seem long and makes the video drag on. There are some b-roll shots, but they are not always incorporated into what the subject is saying- they seem more like they're placed randomly. This project could have been improved by checking audio levels and coordinating the b-roll with what the subject is talking about.
Schwartz, Pre-Video Assignment
Good Video:
http://www.vice.com/video/daily-vice-bun-b-wisconsin-trump-rally-campaign-trail
This video has very good narrative structure, use of different shots, and captures the overall feelings of the event. I think it represented the different groups of people at the people very well. The use of natural sound and narration was blended well together. The camera shot changes almost every 3 seconds but it never feels rushed. The interview subjects were shot from interesting/good angles.
Bad Video:
http://www.capitalgazette.com/multimedia/videos/cgnews-dr-jumprope-prostate-cancer-awareness-20150822-premiumvideo.html
This isn't completely terrible. There are wide, medium, and detail shots throughout but they are of only the one subject. The person who made this video could have opened with something to catch our attention, instead of just a title, and focused on more than just the one subject. I would have liked to see the area surrounding the interviewee, and known more about the event. The ending is also very abrupt.

Chanyalew, Pre-Video Assignment
Good Project:
Creative use of forming a narrative and telling a story without words. Does well to keep the msic in sync with the actions. Good use of angles and different shots, close ups; solid transitions that are smooth.
Bad Project:
Only one person interviewed. Not sure why there is a mix of video and stills while the guy is talking, lacks consistency. Direction of interview/purpose of the video is not very clear. Does not seem to have much of a point/direction, and the interview answers seem scattered and disorganized, doesn't really flow.
Zephir, Pre-Video Assignment
GOOD PROJECT
This is a good example multimedia project. If you are familiar with the world of Pokemon, this video should be easy to understand. However, judging it as a project piece it contains, various camera angles, well placed Pokemon music from the video games, and special animations. When the two players begin to battle you recognize immediately that this is a good over the shoulder shot until it cuts to a close up shot of the player issuing the challenge. Putting it bluntly, it is a great representation of the video game brought into real life.
BAD PROJECT
You might be surprised about this choice, but this is my video water pollution multimedia project that I did for my Environmental Science class. I could think of no more horrible project then this one even though it got me an A+ in my class. It contains so much shaky cam, horrible audio quality, and at one point horrible video quality. While viewing you can see that there are some glimmers of light when referring to some of the animations and music but that is all it is...GLIMMERS OF LIGHT. For a multimedia project, I would consider this to be sloppy and put together at the last minute. DO NOT DO YOUR FINAL PROJECT THIS WAY.
Dyson, Pre-Video Assignment
This piece has the benefit of being professionally done, but it still meets all the requirements of a good multimedia project. It's visually engaging through the use of different camera angles and cuts as well as the use of concise graphics that are easy and quick to understand. The script is very well written; engaging and humorous.
This project doesn't come from a news organization, so it's easy to understand why some of the more technical aspects are a bit shoddy. The use of video and photography intertwined together takes the viewer out of the project. The music used doesn't fade out, it abruptly cuts out instead. As far as the content is concerned, only one subject was interviewed while there are clearly more subjects available for comment.
Roberts, Pre-Video Assignment
Bad project: Cloggins https://vimeo.com/149360023
This project was not terrible by any means; however, there a
few technical problems that could have easily been fixed. For starters, the
interviews shots are so wide and not visually appealing. The setting of the
interview was good, but the angle was not. Also, the audio was pretty bad,
probably due to the lack of equipment and failing to get the camera close to
the subject. These minor details really detract from the overall project. The in-game
video and voice over was good but lack the story telling visuals that it
needed. I believe that this project was while interesting and showed promise,
missed to really tell the story visually and effectively.
Good project: Christ https://vimeo.com/149242299
This project compelled me on many levels. Although there was
no voice over or interviews, I do not believe she needed them. Her visuals were
so strong and music choice set the tone perfectly. The edited she did to sequence
the process of finding a Christmas tree for the holidays was perfect. It is a
true example of what filmmaking has come to in a digital, camera-everywhere
world. You could feel apart of the process without any narration, and that is
what many people are drawn today. The vibe of the video was strong and suited
this project well.

Lang, Pre-Video Assignment
Good Video: This video from the Washington Post is really cool, and has a lot of great visuals that help to tell the story. I like how the video allowed the cartoonist to tell the story instead of the reporter. It felt more natural and made it flow seamlessly.
Bad Video: Granted, this was from three years ago. But, you can definitely tell that the reporter didn't use a tripod because the picture was very shaky, and the interview subjects were looking straight at the camera, which was just awkward. Also, I think it would have been a more comprehensive project if they had gotten a non-student perspective, like someone that manages the property.
