Raye Weigel Photo Assignment #3

A group of students from the University of Maryland gathered for "Kahwa Wa Kutub", a coffee and literature club that explores contemporary Middle Eastern literature in order to think critically about the representation of Middle Eastern people in the Western world today.

The table was strewn with coffee and tea paraphernalia.

One student came to the event from her art class. Black paint still splattered her hands.

The group discussed the highly politicized female body, and how it is seen differently in Middle Eastern vs. Western Cultures.

A rich assortment of teas was available.

The students engaged in heated but friendly debate about United States relations with Saudi Arabia and why poet Ashraf Fayadh was imprisoned for his poetry.
