Man on the street video - Foose

Tim - I posted a good video, a pre-video (poor video) and now this one.  Not sure if you wanted three total or even if you wanted Man on the Street video?

Pre-Video Owookade

Bad: The mixing of music and SOT was not always consistent. Camera work was done by hand and sometimes by phone mount, so was shaky.
Good: Although a lot of b-roll and footage is shot by hand, the video maintains excellent sound quality and has great transitions. The blogger's words help serve as a transition for the next b-roll. Also, I love Belaef in Fatherhood. So much gusto.

Pre-video Assignment, Jessica Schueckler

These two videos are my examples of good projects, even though the production quality, exposure and set are not so great. So considering those major flaws, the bad production of the videos can be pretty distracting to the cleverness of the concept or story.

However, I think what makes them good is the framing. For the first video, each "plot moment" really has one frame, and that prepares the person watching to understand or look for another idea. In the second video, the camera angles follow the perspectives of the two characters: for example, when the camera points up the stairs to where the person being chased is running, the next camera angle is of the murderer coming up the stairs. Because of this specific flow, there is continuity between frames.

So while both of these videos are bad, they're also both pretty good. I may be biased since my brother and his friend made them.

Good video:

TRUCKISTAN — ٹرکستان from Stanislas Giroux on Vimeo.

http://www.stanislasgiroux.com/stories-of-truckistan/

I liked that this video told a story, that does not seem glamorous at first but is actually very interesting. I also like that there is no voice, just the images and transitions tell the story.

bad video:

This video was way too high-speed, it made me dizzy. I could not concentrate on the food or instructions.

Pre-video Tansill

I tried to sort of turn the tables when looking for these videos. I wanted to find an exceptional video created by an amateur film maker, and a shoddy one created by a more experienced team.

Good video: Watch Your Step (Skit)

Bad video: Laura in the Kitchen ep.1. She has since gone on to be perhaps the best-known amateur cook on Youtube.

I think this project does a good job of explaining who Thom deVita is without explicitly telling you who he is if that makes sense. I think all of the footage has been carefully selected to tell a story and I like that.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EiOj0F6WVEE

I don't want to be overly critical of this project because I think it is a cool story but where the documentary on Thom de Vita used film to tell the story, here the filmmaker has told Yoddecha Sityodtong's story almost entirely through dialogue. This approach is less interesting and doesn't seem as authentic. If the filmmaker had used additional interviews and had more footage it would have been more compelling.

Pre-Video, Jacob Rousseau

TENNESSEE FOOTBALL: BULLETPROOF from VFL FILMS on Vimeo.

What I liked about this video was the nat sound, I thought it really added to the piece. Also, they let the community and school be the story with football as the background. I thought that was interesting because a lot of times football can be the focus.

Sunday Night Football 2010 from RD Willis on Vimeo.

I found the music distracting and without the caption I would not have known these were the cities that the games were played in for that year.
