Pre-Video Assignment, Malone

Good example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jiHy7qMUrhA
I thought this was a good example of a multi-media project because of the editing and content. It utilizes good ambient sound from the team's practice, without any overwhelming sound issues throughout. The interview segments don't take place at really any one set angle, but the camerawork is good enough that it keeps both people involved within frame the entire time. I thought it was simple, informative, and easy to follow.

Bad example: https://www.cnn.com/videos/entertainment/2019/04/10/brad-pitt-time-cut-off-los-angeles-county-board-supervisors-meeting-bts-vpx.los-angeles-board-of-supervisors/video/playlists/atv-trending-videos/

This video does what it's meant to do, which is provide a video of an event that happened. However, the video is fairly low quality compared to CNN's typical standards, and the audio at times is a bit difficult to make out at certain points. Also, I think it could've been better if the video provided some context as what was happening in it, rather than a direct paste of a copy of the video.

Example of Bad Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2XNWKzA0kMM
This is a commercial, which tells the story of Bob's discount furniture. Infamously, I believe Bob's is very poor with their marketing, for the reason of the amateur graphics, but also with the loud, abrasive audio.

Example of Good Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Er_HugcPmJ8
This video has always stuck with me as one of the most captivating stories I have seen. In just under 2:30 minutes, the creators of this video paint an emotional, flirty story of a budding story. However, they use this as a mechanism to show the viewers ignorance, as many people ignore the hidden messages in the video, where a student is exhibiting signs of a mass shooter. In the ending of the video the boy opens fire on a gymnasium, which the creators use as a way to create a public service announcement about gun control and knowing the warning signs.

Good

Even though the premise of the story and the actual acting wasn't great, the editing, camera work, use of different features and other things really do make this a good project. In spite of the strange background to the story, I actually enjoyed watching this video due to the editing and other features.

Bad
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WKz3MlTj8Ms

Although this is a silent film and is made by a couple of young kids, I think they could have done a better job with the editing, camera work and some other things. While the acting isn't great and the storyline is rather confusing, the editing job is what actually makes this video tough to watch and think about what could be done better.

Bad:

Narration is fairly good but audio and video quality is poor; sound during interviews is covered by outside sounds, making it difficult to hear the speaker, while video is shaky and constantly moving. Natural sound of people talking would be effective if volume was reduced but it can be distracting during the narration.

Good:

This analysis of music during the Vietnam War very effectively uses a mix of audio, video, photography, and graphics as the narrator talks. The media used works well with the narration to tell a story as each visual provided is used to supplement the narration, not just as a wallpaper. Audio and video quality is great.

This is a bad video project because although the idea and creativity is there, the film lacks visual interest and color. The audio quality is good and the sound effects are appropriate, but the lack of plot and the use of the same background for each clip make the video fall flat. Also, the film doesn’t really tell a story, and doesn’t really leave the viewer with a bigger takeaway or even any new knowledge.

https://youtu.be/rTfj03HtL_4

I think this a good short video because it uses a variety of settings, sound techniques, and styles to push the story along. The visuals are engaging and beautiful and there is a contrast between scenes that are inside versus scenes that take place in nature. I like the colorful backdrops the characters are filmed against and the music does a good job of matching the tone of the scene as well. This film evokes a very emotional response from the viewer and it’s effective because of the variety of visual and audio stimuli throughout the film.

GOOD:
This is one of my all-time favorite videos, I just find it so heartwarming and inspiring, and just really well done. They do a really good job of taking the time to focus on individual people and switching between formal interviews and voiceovers, which keeps the video interesting. There's nice music in the background that sets the tone of the piece in a nice way, but doesn't take away from any actual content. Every piece of video does something to further the "plot"--it gives you more insight into the person being interviewed (like with the woman sketching the butterfly on her finger, for example). The videotaping was done cleanly, without shaking, only moving when it needed to but otherwise staying in one place and letting the scene play out in front of the camera. It leaves me with the urge to watch it again, and honestly completely distracts me from the fact that it's a commercial and not just a nice self-esteem message. I think it's great!

BAD:
This definitely isn't typical to what we'd be seeing or making in our class, it's more of a student film, but it's a great example of what NOT to do when making a multi-media project. Putting aside the fact that the plot and story don't really flow or make sense, the film jumps from scene to scene very often and too aggressively. Add to that, that each scene change has a powerpoint, slide-changing effect sound, makes it really poorly done. The music is very loud and overpowering of what's going on at each point, and they switch songs almost as often as they do locations. The camera work is very shaky, you can tell that it's either hand-held or hastily controlled, and the lip dub audio they added on top of the actual video is a few seconds slower than the movement of the people's lips.

Bad

I choose this video for the bad project because it is a bit depressing. There is no audio aside from random music playing and the visual consists of a slideshow of random images with text at the bottom. I am not sure if the text is supposed to be some sort of poem or story. Overall the project is very poor and doesn't seem to have much content or effort put into it.

Good
http://cronkiteworks.asu.edu/streets_of_dreams/index.html

I choose this site as an example of a good project because the way the site is designed is very interesting and interactive. The site explores the people and places of downtown Phoenix, Arizona with short videos on the various places and people. The thumbnails open up a video about each place and/or person with good interviews and transitions between the reporter and interviewee. Lots of different shots and clips that give the audience the feeling of actually being there in downtown Phoenix.

Bad: https://youtu.be/hFvdrpGQKk4

I think this multimedia project was not the strongest and could have been improved with different camera and audio decisions. The beginning hook with the conference started good however, the camera was moving and needed to be on a tripod through the opening clips. Also, during the interview segments the camera was not positioned with the interviewees on the side but rather they were positioned so they were looking straight at the camera while they were talking. It would have been more natural to have them on the side of the camera looking to the interview off to the side like we learned in class. When the interviewees were speaking, the background noise was a little to loud and it was hard to hear what they were saying and it became distracting.

Good: https://www.cnn.com/videos/us/2018/06/01/fbi-solves-mummy-identity-orig-tc.cnn

This multimedia project had good camera, audio and content. The background noise benefited the video, it did not distract away from any interviews going on. The camera was set up appropriately when giving interviews so that the interviewees were not looking straight at the camera and were in a setting where the background was not distracting, and they were not positioned directly in front of the camera. The audio was clean and understandable throughout the project. The clips that were displayed while an interviewee was talking added to the project as it showed findings. Even when the camera was moving it remained steady and was not shaky throughout the project. The information provided by the interviews only aided the project and did not confuse or distract from the purpose. Overall, I thought CNN did a really good job with this multimedia project.

Example of good video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Er_HugcPmJ8

I saw this video three years ago and it still has stayed with me as one of the best videos I have seen. The video focuses on one story line of a budding romance, when there is a much deeper community problem, of a mass shooter, exhibiting signs, and no one noticing. I liked the drama and message this video conveyed, as well as the storyline, and music.

BAD

http://dc.medill.northwestern.edu/blog/2019/04/05/zebrafish-are-making-waves-for-limb-regeneration-research/#sthash.RLHpsSVF.dpbs

This a great story that is both unique and interesting. The audio is a great quality as is the script. However, it is clear that the student didn't use a tripod because the camera is very shaky, making it somewhat distracting for the audience. That said, in some scenes, the interviewees head is partially cut off. So to, some of the shots of the fish are cut off or choppy and shaky. I think this story was good, but it had the potential to be a lot better and a lot cleaner. For the third interviewee, the informational box also cuts off part of her face. There were also way too many shots of the fish just swimming. I think if the reporter had added more unique footage of the fish, perhaps very zoomed in shots of the fish or footage of the fish being fed, that would've been more interesting and visually appealing.

GOOD
https://cnsmaryland.org/2017/02/23/360-video-oyster-aquaculture-seeks-to-preserve-eastern-shore-industry/

This is a very interesting and effective way to share this story. The interactive 360 video allows you to see the oyster farmers out on the boat and in the workshop shucking and sorting the oysters. You also get to see the oysters being served at a bake. It's a great way to see a process people know little about from start to finish.

Video/Multimedia project choice (GOOD): Future is tired of making your wrongs right
I selected this project/interview released by The Fader as my good example of a multimedia project. In this video there are multiple things done well, which make it a fitting selection. The first thing I noticed was that the camera was well-positioned all throughout the interview. There were no abrupt shifts in the camera, nor was the interviewee/interviewer extended/shortened by faulty camera angling. For example, the interviewee’s head was properly placed within the frame (not too far below the top, but not too close to the bottom), so he did not appear to be falling or slouching. This project also had consistent imagery -- the entire interview was well-lit, and other imagery used was relevant and scenic (New York streets, people walking and smoke from the sewer set the scene). The names and social handles that appeared on-screen were well-sized (big enough to read, but small enough to not distract the audience). The font of these words was also clean and easily readable. The speaking voices of those featured alternated well. There was enough from the interviewer to help the conversation flow and not seem one-sided, but it also allowed the interviewee to say what was needed to express himself. There was also a good dynamic flow, the imagery goes from close-ups on interviewee/interviewer to far-away shots. This is why this was a good example of a multimedia/video project.

Video/Multimedia project choice (BAD): Nardwar vs. Lil Uzi Vert Interview

There are a few reasons why I chose this video interview as my bad example of a multimedia project. The first reason was that the camera moves frequently. At one point the camera man even runs to follow the interviewee. The camera also pans (seemingly for no actual reason) too much during the interview. I think the project was also too fast, the interview is extremely rushed and mostly comical due to the actions of the interviewee and interviewer (running, not asking open-ended questions that drive conversation. Lastly, there was a bit of inconsistency as far as camera angles, volume control and voice control. These are the reasons why I used this multimedia project/video as my bad example.

Pre-Video Assignment - Flumbaum

Good Video: This first video is a short piece about someone, presumably a family member, leaving their home after years of living on the land and taking care of it. I think this is a good project because it is simple, yet includes some soft NAT sound, some music, good lighting, and audio. However, I do think it could use a lower third or something to let you know who this lady is. Just a little more info to round off a generally good piece with strong meaning.

Bad Video: This isn't exactly something I think we would do in a journalism multimedia classes, but this is a classic example of what not to do when making a multimedia project: filming on your iPad 2 and using that same iPad 2 to edit with iMovie. I couldn't help but post it. Now I'm not knocking iMovie because you can make some good stuff with it, but what am I watching here. The edits are basic and there isn't really anything that stands out. The first video was 100 times better in terms of content and meaning, and of course, probably took more time and effort. Maybe the point of this Pokemon project was to be fun/funny, but just a little more time and effort would have gone miles with this project.
