Ryun Anderson Pre Video Assignment
Bad: I hate to pick on high schoolers but this multimedia project was indefensible. The rapid visual changes were completely distracting, and made the audio even harder to follow than it already would have been. I probably missed about two-thirds of the words said in this project. The visuals either focused on corny puns or nothing at all (just scenes of them walking around their school grounds which had nothing to do with the actual content of the video).
Good: Some of the interviews were a little long and uneventful but the content was compelling and so were some of the visuals in the second half of the project. The audio was also much easier to follow than the first project.

In hindsight, I realize that my video would have been much better with some tight shots of her hands and face, which would have allowed for easier transitions.

Good example:
Balinese from Brandon Li on Vimeo.
The music, the transitions, the people that filmmaker Brandon Li decides to feature is incredible. I love the wide spectrum of images that Li showcases, such as traditional practices and every day happenings of the motorcycle group. It takes the audience on a ride of emotions--the music really helps but also the variety of frames and landscapes that are being shown take the audience on a rollercoaster.
Bad example:

B****: is it + or - in society & music? from Karla on Vimeo.
No transitions, audio is bad and the lighting is not good on the interviewees.

"Good"
Not only is this a compelling story, the visuals are just as interesting. They used a combination of current video and photographs from the subject's youth. It's a little text/graphics heavy but I didn't feel it took anything away from the story.
"Bad"
While I love the VlogBrothers channel on YouTube, their videos are not that great technically. A large majority of what they shoot is stationary, in an office or at a desk. They attempt to make it interesting with visuals and little jumps, but the single shot can become dull quickly.

Good example:
Even though I originally saved this video for my "good" example (because I love dogs), as I was thinking about it, it was easier to point out the video's flaws than it's strengths. The hook, of dogs playing in a yard, isn't unique enough to pull the viewer in - and the cameramen don't use b-roll when interviewers are talking. There are also instances in the video, like in the cat room, where the lighting makes it difficult to see the people who are talking. I also thought the music was weird, but since this video is a few years old, I'm willing to write that one off.
Part of the reason I liked this was the subject matter - I just thought it was sweet. There were also some great video elements, though. The reporter made sure to interview people from all angles of this story - prison employees, prisoners, children and their usual guardians. The close-ups of the peoples' reactions help the audience feel emotion, and the team had footage of preparation for the event that built anticipation. The hook, talking to the child who had never met her father, was especially poignant.

This video was captivating to watch. The b-roll footage was
filmed with interesting perspectives and helped to set the scene. I liked the
use of voice overs and natural sound over the footage. The interviews were
staged well, and I liked the use of facts flashing across the screen without
them being read aloud. It provided more information than what was being said in
interviews and through voice overs without making the video longer than it had
to be.
Bad example:
I almost felt bad using this middle school project as an
example of a bad video, but it does highlight many things not to do to produce
a successful video. The shaky videos, some of them being horizontal phone
videos, are distracting. Hands can be seen in the lens in several instances,
while full heads are cropped sometimes. The staging of the video clips do not
follow the rule of thirds and the sources are looking at the camera. The music
overpowers speakers’ voices at times, and the photos used are disproportional
and blurry.
